Quilt For Equality For NIU

img_20180326_161616922.jpg

For those of you who remember, I have a quilt at the Pick Museum of Anthropology at NIU. Well, I offered to make a replica quilt for The Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality. They accepted, and I finally got around to starting it. Well, I did quite a bit of sewing this weekend, and I finally have the top together, and I eve started quilting it last night! The museum exhibit was extended, so I’m hoping to drop it off before the show ends! Fingers Crossed!

Knitted Some Fabric For Myself

img_20180312_141722653.jpg

The nice thing about working in a knitting factory, is that when I need some special fabric for a special project, I can just make it.

The down side is, quilting with knits in a bitch. All the stabilizing, and gluing, and stitching… But you know what, it’s going to be totally worth it! At least that’s what I keep telling myself… More Pictures after the jump… Continue reading

I Started A New Quilt

img_20180311_210125438.jpg

I started a new quilt… not that I don’t have a bunch started. We all know how that goes. I’m also trying to go through all of my damn jelly rolls. I did a count, and I have over 70 jelly roll packs. Here is one down!

I’m not sure what I’m going to name it yet, but something about it screams “On Fire”. Can you tell I have a quilt type??? Hopefully I’ll finish this soon.

Making The Mesh For Distortion – A Prayer For Zachary

img_20180209_211303909.jpg

I’m totally cheating with my embroidery machine! It does the best applique! And for this project, it’s perfect. It’s almost comedic to look in my sewing room right now. It’s covered in ribbon, fabric scraps, thread, and starch based glue. I just buy Elmer’s by the gallon. They sell it at Walmart for like 10 dollars, and goodness knows I’m using it by the gallon. ‘A Prayer For Zachary’ did have to take a back seat this week with the blizzard we had, and I got a throat infection. It’s like this avian flu just won’t leave me alone. Don’t get sick, it’s for the birds… Literally! (More Pictures after the jump.)

Heaven Is A Warehouse Store In Pilsen…

img_20180204_102141884.jpg

Yesterday, a friend and I ventured to the Textile Discount Outlet in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. It is trip everyone should take. I’m not going to lie, being a suburb guy, the drive into the city is never easy… Having only one functioning eye, I can assure you, highway driving is never fun, and highway driving in the city is never a picnic. I made the trek however!

It was such a blast! For any true fabric lover, hours can be lost here… Perhaps even days! I need a second trip, just to take it all in. The building is amazing, and the stock is even more so. You can find everything! Upholstery fabric for days, weeks even, and the lace and tulle selection is unrivaled. The staff is super amazing and helpful, and I had quite a bit of fun shopping with my quilting cohort!

Their quilting fabric selection was quite large, and now that I’m working on some art quilts, this place contains endless possibilities. I need to go back sooner rather than later. Perhaps once it warms up a bit… Like in a couple weeks… Or maybe once I finish some of these projects before I start 12 new ones…. Who knows!

“A Prayer For Zachary” Blocks Are Almost Done

img_20180129_1608160361.jpg

This was no easy task, but it is almost done. A couple pieces still need to be added here and there, but for the most part, the base of the blocks are done. Now to start adding texture with the tulle, netting, ribbon, and lace. I’m going through a lot of water soluble stabilizer, but I think the results will be ridiculously awesome! You can see some of the white circles are already starting to show up on the quilt blocks. In those spots I took the tulle, ribbon, scraps, netting, and what not, and stitched it down to the blocks.

My sashing comes in tomorrow, and you bet I’ll start adding it on my day off! I’m very excited! Wish me luck!

It’s been a long week, and it’s only Wednesday! Although, you must all be thinking… Eric, how can it be a long week when you have such a gorgeous scarf collection??? Well, you’ve got me there! I actually made all of these before Christmas, but but distracted with that stupid Brid Flu… I will never look at birds the same again!

Anyways, click below to check out my new Star Wars scarf! It comes in a couple different colors, and I think everyone will approve!

My Latest Project: “A Prayer For Zachary”

img_20180121_195707805.jpg

You all remember the scarves I made from scraps I’ve been posting about, well here is a quilt in the same vein. I sewed some squares I had from previous projects together into 25″ squares, then took a bunch of scraps I had and started sewing them down onto the panels. It was not easy to make this happen without stiffening the hell out of my fabric. I didn’t want to use and kind of permanent stabilizer because I do want this as a bed quilt, so instead, I got creative… Continue reading

More Scarves From More Scraps

img_20180111_150622521.jpg

I’ve been a busy little sewer! Well, at least I’m trying to be. When I started making these scarves out of my scraps I had no idea how much fun they would be! I have a green one currently in the works, as well as a pink one, but they still need to have the topper put on, and sewn more. The only trick is, you have to stitch enough to secure everything in place, but not too much to make it too stiff. It’s a little tricky finding the right amount, but once you get the hang of it, it’s so much fun.

Busting My Scrap Pile!!!

img_20180114_174759789.jpg

I have all of these scraps from the commissions I used to do. At first, I figured I would make one last Zelda quilt to sell, but decided to do something else with them. I’m working on a project called “A Prayer”. I’m not ready to say who the prayer is for, but as soon as I am, I’ll tell you the full name of the quilt. Until then, just enjoy all of the lovely green fabric I have lying around!
