Working On My Pond

Lakeville-20130709-00453

Everyone remembers my Pondscape Project, right? After taking a monster nap today I decided to get back to work on sewing! I broke out this beast. I have had it part way done for almost 6 months now. I started it, and I got overwhelmed by it. I don;t know about the rest of you, but every now and then I start to second guess my work about halfway through. I thought I cut the diamonds a little too large, and I felt like they would have blended better had I gone with a smaller diamond. Now that I am almost done with the top – I think I did okay. Could the diamonds be a little bit smaller…. maybe, but I really like it the way it is now. Like I said before I’m making this for someone special who I recently reconnected with. One of my fondest memories of her is when she hemmed and ironed my communion pants for me. Now I get to give her this soon. One sewing project for another. I really hope she likes it!

Finished TJ’s Zelda Quilt Top

Lakeville-20130707-00435

Even though I am sick, I have managed to finished sewing this top! I couldn’t stand looking at it anymore in the state of a half finished top in pieces on my floor. My allergies are acting up, and my eyes keep watering, so watching the sewing machine was a little much for me, so I had to finish it in parts, and only sew one or two seams at a time. It was kind of nice though to be able to catch up on some of my Netflix dvds that came in the mail this week. ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ was pretty darn good! I’m not usually one for action movies, but it was pretty entertaining.

I’m sure people are more interested in how I sewed this beautiful creation, and less interested in what movies I like to watch. So, I sewed the diagonal strips together with the squares. Then I ironed all of the strips with the seams in opposite directions from each strip. So every other one had the seams facing down, and the other ones had the seams facing up. I think just started sewing them on my machine and a couple dozen seams later. Here it is in almost all of it’s glory. I still have to quilt it. Haha.

Picked A Border For Miss A’s Quilt

Lakeville-20130705-00408

As everyone knows, I did the body of the quilt 2 days ago. Since then I have had a hard time picking out what color to do for the border. At first, I wanted something that would tie in with the colors already in the quilt. Then I thought I really didn’t want something to take away from the center, so I had to scratch that idea. Then I thought I might do black, but then I remembered it was for a toddler, so maybe stay away from the black. Then I thought about doing this smokey violet, and I fell in love! I hope that everyone else likes it as much as I do

Damien’s Quilt is Done!

Lakeville-20130704-00404

I just got home, and the first thing I did was pull this beauty out of the dryer! How gorgeous it is! I was bummed at first because I really wanted to do a bright blue binding, but the blue I had n mind I was about 6 square inches short on, and so I had to change my plans! So, instead, I used a green fabric that pops up a few other times in the quilt and I think it really just makes everything pop!

For the backing I went with a nice plaid I had lying around. It’s very comfortable, and it’s really dull and plain, which is a nice contrast to the top of the quilt, being very saturated and bright! I really love the contrast! I also like the way the green binding hits the colors of the backing! I used a nice burgundy thread on the top, and a black thread on the bottom to fade into the plaid. I’m overall very happy with the way it turned out, and now I get to give it to my nephew the next time I see hit! I really hope he’ll like it!

Beginnings of The Bargello Baby Quilt

First off, let me apologize for the lack of posts today! I’ve had an electrician over fixing the ceiling lights in my sewing room, so I was unfortunately parted with my fabric. Although, in the past hour or so, we have had a very fabulous reunion if I do say so myself. I’ve started to make large strips of fabric for my bargello baby quilt, and I’ve been laying them across my floor and ogling them for the past few minutes! So, now let me share them with you!

Damien’s Quilt Update!

Lakeville-20130702-00348

I’ve been slaving over a hot sewing machine all night to bring you this! Okay, maybe I slacked a little and watched an episode the French crime serial “Spiral”, but then I got right back to work! Maybe two episodes tops!

As I sewed the blocks for this quilt top I could only think about how beautiful and saturated the colors are! I know traditional baby quilts are bright and cheery, but I think they can be cheerful without being bright. Once again, I really hope I’m right! Now, everyone knows I love jewel tones! So, I used the crap out of them! I went digging for scraps from previous quilts looking for the perfect shades of green, red, orange, and purple. The Border will be a nice saturated red, without being dark, which was not an easy task to find in my stash! I’ce also been listening to Dusty Springfield the entire time I have been sewing. I felt the need for a soulful singer, so I could channel all the depth into a beautiful quilt top! Mostly, I just like me some Dusty to sew too. I can hear her over my sewing machine, and my sewing machine is LOUD!

Anywho, back on topic! I chose the colors because the Parents wanted something saturated with the colors most apt for development, which are the primaries and secondaries, so this top is just chock full of them! I hope everyone enjoys the pictures of this beautiful beast!

The Start of Damien’s Quilt

Lakeville-20130701-00345

I’m sitting here in my basement fervently tearing up my stash of fabric looking for any fun scrap I can add to this fun quilt top. I decided that I was not going to do the puzzle piece as I did with my other nephew’s quilt. Both of his parents are quite the individuals, and so I imagine he will be quite the individual too! I decided to make his a wave of colors almost. It is going to start out as red, and then fade to green, then to orange then to purple, then to green, and then back to red. I’m not sure how I came up with the idea, but I’m really enjoying it as it starts to come together! I already started piecing scraps together to get fun textures and colors in the quilt, and I already started to pattern then out on my floor.

I’m kind of just rolling with th pattern for now, and it is very apt to change as it gets closer to being done, so we shall see how far it ends up from it’s starting point.
