Just wanted to share some pieces I’ve had on the backburner. I almost forgot I had this blog. It’s been a crazy 2 years. Hopefully After the Holidays I’ll get back on it.

The studio de Eric has been in full swing… Well, trying to be in full swing. I’m still taking time for small existential breakdowns. Trying to keep busy, and focus on making some art! I’ve been digging through all of my half finished projects, and trying to do something with them! I’ve even been quilting! I have a quilt top finished, and hopefully I’ll start quilting it tonight! I’ve decided to give you guys a teaser of some of the projects currently on the slab. Keep in mind, these are not completed pieces, so they will look quite a bit different by the time I finish them!

It’s using a neural network to search for patterns in images. It takes your main image and searches then overlays it with the patterns from your send image. For the main image for this post: it stared as a picture of one of my quilts. Then, it got overlaid with an image of some roving for an art yarn I plan on spinning. If you look, you can see the fibers and hunks of silk printed onto the original image.
It really is quite the trip. I’ve been playing around with images of my textile work, layered with images of other textile pieces. If you want to see all of the images before and after the filter, check out my Deep Dream page on Deep Dream Generator.

This one was quite the journey from start to finish. The photo the quilt was made from was done my a wonderfully talented photographer and artist, Cayton Cox. (Check out his Instagram here.) The quilt itself is broken up into 60 different squares and rectangles. It was kind of difficult, but it was fun watching it all come together. The final size is approximately 40 by 60 inches. (I still have to attach the hanging sleeve.) It’s made with over 50 different fabrics, in all sorts of textures ranging from tulle to heavyweight upholstery fabric. I’m scheduled to teach a class on this printing technique this summer at the Textile Center of Minnesota, but with everything going on, I’m not super sure. I suppose only time will tell.

I’m not typically an earth tone person, but hey, I’ll tell you what… This shit is on hit! It’s made from quilting cotton, and knit acrylic fabric, that I even knit myself at work. I’m really digging the texture it lends this quilt. It also gave me an excuse to use up some brown jelly roll strips I had left over from another project.
Now I just have to find time to quilt it… Wish me luck!

True Love! That’s all I feel for this! I can’t even describe it in words. I had all the charm packs lying around, and I just decided to use them! I don’t know what I was saving them for, but damn it! It looks good! Now, part of me wants to try some funky free motion quilting on it, the other part wants me to use an embroidery motif, and the last part says send it off to be quilted. I’m not sure! Part of me is asking if I trust myself enough to free motion it myself? To be honest, I’m not sure… We’ll see. A dear friend of mine is quilting three quilts for me as we speak… (Well, I think she mounted one on her frame, possibly…) I’m just not sure. I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

It’s no secret to my friends that I love Twin Peaks! This new season is on hit! It’s confusing as hell, but I’m just so damn into it! Anyways, I made this Twin Peaks inspired quilt, called: Fire Walk With Me. And that verbiage is actually what it is quilted with. I used my embroidery machine, and digitized a couple versions of that phrase to stitch through the layers with. I also made a version of the Black Lodge symbol. The one that appears on the green ring. It’s kind of hard to read it all on the front, but on the back is where you can see all of this amazing stitching! I made it for a friend, but she doesn’t know it is for her yet. I think she’ll love it! More pictures after the jump!
I was at work today, contemplating about what the heck to do with all of those charm squares I had decided to start sewing together. Part of me just thought, well just make a giant nickel quilt, but then I have the matching Jelly rolls to play with as well. There were a lot of possibilities, and I think this one is going to work for me! Wish me luck! Maybe I’ll have half the top done by Monday!!!! Fingers crossed!

I have been pulling 60 hour weeks and I need a break! Tonight I dug out this quilt top and laid it out on my table and I’m plotting a way to quilt it! I was thinking stitch in the ditch, but to be honest, I’m not sure. Any suggestions?
I took an old quilt background I had lying around and added some applique to it to make it flow more, and I really hated it. I mean, it really sucked to look at. So then I added paint, and more paint, and now I have something I can work with! I think I’m going to call it Flint. Hopefully I’ll have it done soon, and I can show it off!
