Quilted ‘Shattered Glass’

I finally did the quilting on Shattered Glass. I didn’t have time to do a binding yet, but I will do that later today.

I decided to do stitching in the ditch and running through the sashing and borders in red, and then I decided to put random lines through the entire quilt in blue just to add texture!

Sorry I’ve Been MIA Today

Sorry I haven’t been active today! I’ve just been cleaning up my house and organizing the kitchen, and then I spent some quality time with my Roommate and her daughter. So that was nice, but I haven’t sewn anything. Later tonight, in the wee hours of morning, I’m thinking about quilting this top tonight as a surprise for the roommate! I hope she’ll like it!

I’m using burgundy thread and I’m not sure the quilting method I’ll use, but I’ll figure something out!

Confessions of A Quilt-aholic: Sewing Through Depression

I have a confession: I have depression.

I was diagnosed with depression about 2 years ago, and up until last year I never really had anything that made me very happy. That was the case until I found quilting. I think there is something therapeutic about watching the sewing needle pierce fabric thousands of times, and not to mention beating down corner seams with a mallet to get them to lie flat. I find the entire project therapeutic. I get to watch something I make go from a pile of fabric to a gorgeous quilt. I think each step of the process really helps me get out of a slump, and even pushes me towards being happier in general. That’s actually part of the reason I started this blog.

Polyester Thread: Friend or Foe?

Tales of polyester thread have been spun all over the internet. Some of them, are ridiculously false, and some of them, I have no idea if they are true or not.

I was recently reading a book on rotary cutting, and the author says that polyester thread will cut through your quilt and will ruin it. I thought to myself, “that’s bleeding ridiculous”, and I call shenanigans! Think about that for a second. Would polyester thread cut through your cotton quilt? No! I instantly thought about a shirt or blouse. I have plenty of cotton shirts with polyester thread, and I highly doubt that any amount of stress a quilt will be under would be far less than the seam on the sleeve of the one of my work shirts. Think about a silk blouse. This clearly isn’t true! I know there are quite a few people who hate all things polyester. I’m not saying I love the fabric, but the thread is nice in my opinion! How Should I Quilt This?

Okay, people of the internet, I need some help. So, My uncle’s father’s day present is a bit over-due, and I need to quilt it later this week. I was thinking about just stitching in the ditch to make the framed pieces of themed fabric pop! What does everyone else think?

Confessions of a Quilt-aholic – My Stash

As I sit in bed watching MTV’s Awkward on my laptop, after a failed attempt to go to sleep, I stare at my totes full of fabric. I think about how I got the fabric. Being a broke college student, quilting is quite an expensive hobby, but since I don’t go to bars or anything like that I never feel too bad about my fabric shopping exploits. However, most of my fabric I didn’t buy from the store. I buy a lot of it on craigslist when people are clearing out their stash. I also got quite a bit as a gift from a very kind woman who just wanted me to have it. In fact I think the backing I used for Miss A’s Quilt came from her. It was such a kind gesture and I’ll always be grateful for it, and that is one of the reasons I try to give back with my quilting to organizations such as Quilts of Valor. So as I gaze upon these totes I can see hundreds of possible quilt tops, and it’s honestly a little overwhelming. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I quilt in a manic state… or maybe, I’m just manic. Continue reading

Binding is On Miss A’s Quilt

Lakeville-20130720-00516

As I type this, the quilt of which we speak is in the dryer! I’m really excited to see it once all of the fabric once all of the sizing is washed out! I love a quilt out of the wash after I quilt it. The way it gets all crumpled and looks like something you want to cuddle up with on a stormy night while watching your favorite movie. In my case, Malice In Wonderland. However this quilt is not for me, so I digress.

For this quilt I chose to do a bright green binding just to make it more fun, and a little brighter. I was going to do a pink binding, but I think the green made it pop out more and just adds a sense of levity to the quilt. After all, it is for a toddler!
